27 Coffee Roasters Kamakura

Kamakura is known for its coffee - so if I ever stop by the area, I always like to check out a new cafe. Recently we visited 27 Coffee Roasters, which lets you pick from a variety of beans before you order.

There are tins so you can take a whiff of each of the beans

They source all of their coffee beans from Honduras, and a little endearingly, each of the single origin beans seemed to be named after a real person (a farmer or maybe the owner of the bean being sold?)

We settled for pourover (i.e. “filter coffee” on the menu) of Nelson and Manuel. And Nelson was the clear standout - it was a light roast, yet there wasn’t even a hint of sourness. I would definitely drink this one again.

We also got two scones, that came with a seasonal lemon jam (yum). These were good scones!

All the beans are also available for sale, and the shop does a couple of its own blends as well.

Notably their sakura blend is quite expensive by Tokyo standards - over 3,000 yen for 200g. Usually blends tend to be on the cheaper side, so I’m not sure if it’s because it’s a limited edition that the price is still high, or whether the quality of the beans they used is high.

Their single origin bean prices are on the pricey end for Tokyo, but I’ll let it pass since Nelson tasted so good. We decided to splurge a little and spent around 3,300 yen for a 200g pack of their “David” beans. We did wonder whether we should just go with Nelson, but I wanted to try something different.

We did ask the staff what their recommended temperature for pour over was, and they let us know that in-store they do it at 93°C. After a couple of tries at home, we settled on 93°C and 10 clicks on our grinder (usually I go for 15) and it tastes pretty good. A touch of sourness from David but like a tasty sort of sourness if that makes sense.

It's sort of like we're collecting Pokemon cards here
