Asakusa Shokuya, Niigata

Asakusa Shokuya, Niigata

If I happen to be near Echigo-Yuzawa station, I always stop by Asakusa Shokuya (食家 あさくさ)

They specialise in “kamameshi”, which is a rice dish where the rice is individually cooked in a pot, and then that pot is directly served to you. And if you order the tarekatsu, you will get these absolutely huge pieces of fried pork cutlets that have been soaked in sauce on top.

It’s like, the best thing I have ever eaten in Japan.

A photo of the same dish from another visit - there's three slices of meat stacked on top of your rice

I haven’t been by in a while, but this was one of the first places that came to mind when I think about places I want to recommend on my blog. And even with the huge portion sizes, I remember the pricing to be really reasonable.

It’s only a short walk from Echigo-Yuzawa station, so if you happen to be skiing at the nearby Gala Yuzawa Snow Resort, it can be a nice pit stop before you get on the Shinkansen back to Tokyo.
