Black kite (black-eared)

Known as both “tobi” or “tonbi”. In Japan lives the black-eared subspecies.

These are a common sight when near the coast, although they tend to be soaring at quite a height so you can’t get more than a distant photo of it. They have a distinctive piercing cry and are known to dive-bomb and steal your food in areas with large crowds.

If you sit on the beach near Enoshima, there is plenty of opportunity to get a close-up shot as they are everywhere. If you try and have a picnic, they will be upon you in no time.
