Diggy Doo's Coffee

Winning the title for weirdest coffee shop name is Diggy Doo’s Coffee in Sydney. They have a store tucked away on a side street near Wynyard station, but also a small kiosk conveniently located in Martin Place. If you’re not familiar, Martin Place and Wynyard are part of the business area of Sydney’s CBD and have a lot of offices, notably for some large banks as well. Which makes for a high concentration of coffee spots in the area.

When I used to work at an office near Martin Place in the pre-COVID, pre-remote days, it was a daily ritual to do a “coffee run” with my coworkers and head to one of the many coffee spots in the area. I hate on Sydney for a lot of things, but they do have some good coffee.

Anyway, Diggy Doo’s had not been on my radar, and it seems that’s because it’s relatively new - it opened in 2021. I was in Sydney last week for a quick trip and was looking for a place to buy some beans on Google Maps, and it popped up.

They sold a couple of different beans, and when I asked the barista for her recommendations, she recommended me two beans, priced at $32 and $45 for 200g each.

I think the $45 one was a Chinese Geisha variety, and I don’t want to spend that much on beans, so I went with the cheaper one - a Ugandan bean from Commonfolk Coffee.

Not sure what the exact name of the bean is though

They don’t make pourover on the spot but do sell cups of their batch brew. They sold cups of both the Chinese and Ugandan beans, so the barista recommended I try the one I didn’t buy.

My verdict - I’d rate the Geisha as alright, maybe a touch sour. But the Ugandan beans that I took back home with me were really good!

As a side note, the beans were an absolute bitch to grind at my usual grind settings - not sure if that is because they are honey-processed, I don’t think I’ve ever bought a honey-processed bean before. I went for 5 clicks coarser than usual and that was a lot better.
