Just some random advice I gave to a friend of my husband’s who was staying near Central station
-
Surry hills is a trendy (expensive) area to live in so you can head in that direction if you want fancy/good food etc. eg burke street bakery pastries
-
between central station and town hall: this is probably the cheapest food in the city (although australia is not that cheap). lots of chinese and korean food, there is a really tiny chinatown. australians love bubble tea (tapioca/boba) so there’s a lot around here like heytea or gotcha fresh tea
-
between town hall and wynyard: office area, kind of dead on weekends. but office workers love their coffee so there is a lot of good coffee shops around here like skittle lane and gumption. if you like coffee definitely try a new shop each day!! edition Roasters MidCity does strawberry matcha latte which is popular in australia right now (maybe boring for a japanese person though)
-
between wynyard and circular quay: another boring office area
-
circular quay: this is the harbour where you can see the harbour bridge + opera house. to be honest I think all the food here is a tourist trap + overpriced. but it’s nice walking. also nearby is “the rocks” if you want a kind of old tourist area (basically where white people in australia first settled)
-
if you like ice cream messina is quite a popular/fancy ice cream store
-
from circular quay you can walk along the water towards barangaoo and head underneath the harbour bridge (very nice walk along the water), or you can head in the other direction, walk towards opera house, royal botanic gardens and out to mrs macquarie’s chair (lookout spot)
-
from circular quay you can get a ferry to manly
-
the two main supermarket chains are woolworths and coles. the ones in the middle of the city are kind of smaller than normal. dont go to 7/11, its shit
other places to go
- blue mountains: can get to via train and bus from sydney, quite far but its the only set of mountains in sydney. has the three sisters
- bondi to coogee coastal walk. you can get a bus to coogee beach, and then walk along the coast until you reach bondi. nice long walk along the ocean
- manly beach
- taronga zoo
