If you’re living in Tokyo and like to read English books, one of the only bookstores worth hitting up is Kinokuniya’s English books branch at Shinjuku station.
I love reading, and browsing books in bookstores is a lot of fun - but I find it’s a lot harder to replicate that fun in Japan when all the books are in Japanese. (I can sort-of read Japanese, but it’s fairly slow-going so I don’t really read books in Japanese for fun).
I read all of my books on a kindle so I rarely even buy physical copies of books, but there’s just something nice about checking out all the covers and seeing what’s been released recently.
The English-language store for Kinokuniya is confusingly called Books Kinokuniya Tokyo on Google Maps, but is actually located across the road from Shinjuku Station in the Takashimaya department store complex. If you’re coming from outside, it’s best to wander around until you can find its signage (it’s in the same building as the furniture store Nitori).
If you’re in the main Takashimaya building already, then head up to the 5th floor, and there will be a walkway connecting across to another building that houses Kinokuniya.
