Muikamachi and Minamionuma, Niigata

My new favourite place to go snowboarding!

Minamionuma is a bit of a mouthful to say, but it’s a city in Niigata, accessible via a 3 hour drive from Tokyo. On the southern end of Minamionuma is Joetsu Kokusai Ski Resort, and as you head up towards the middle/north end you will pass through the town of Muikamachi, which is home to the Muikamachi Hakkaisan Ski resort and the Hakkaisanroku Ski Area.

  Snowboarding in Muikamachi, Niigata

  Until now I haven't really had a favourite area to go snowboarding in - I've visited a handful of ski resorts across Nagano, Niigata, Gunma, Shimane and Hokkaido - but I've just about fallen in love with the Muikamachi area in Niigata.

  Hakkaisanroku Ski Area

  Hakkaisanroku Ski Area (八海山麓スキー場) is a relatively small ski resort located in the city of Minamiuonuma. I think it's overshadowed by the Muikamachi Hakkaisan Ski resort, a larger resort that is only a 25 minute drive away.

  Muikamachi Hakkaisan Ski

  After driving in from Tokyo on Friday and staying at the Muikamachi Hutte, we set out for a day of snowboarding on Saturday at the Muikamachi Hakkaisan Ski resort (六日町 八海山スキー場).

  Muikamachi Hutte

  Last weekend we based ourselves for two nights at Muikamachi Hutte in Niigata. After making the 3-hour drive from Tokyo on Friday, we snowboarded on Saturday at the Muikamachi Hakkaisan Ski resort, did a half day on Sunday at the Hakkaisanroku Ski Area and then drove back home to Tokyo.
