Rising Sun Coffee, Shinjuku

Rising Sun Coffee is a little coffee store tucked away on a quiet residential street in Shinjuku. We spent our Sunday wandering around Shinjuku, so we started off at the nearby Yostuya station, grabbed some coffee here and then made our way over to Shinjuku Gyoen for some birding.

Maybe it’s just me, but the name at first glance brought to mind Japan’s WW2 rising sun flag but naming inspiration is from more of a surfing vibe. They have a number of beans (blend and single origin) you can pick from for a pour over which they will make on the spot.

They have some very cute ceramic drippers - the blue and orange brings to mind a sunrise for sure.

Our honest impressions - I would say it almost tastes a bit too watery. I think we came into this place with really high expectations which didn’t help. And of course, we are now spoilt by our recent experience at Glitch! I would say I have drunken better pour overs in Tokyo (Coffee Supreme comes to mind). But this is a cute place that would still do in a pinch if you are in the area.

You can also pick up a 200g bag of their blend beans for around 1800 - 1900 yen, which is a fairly standard price for Tokyo.

As it turns out, Rising Sun Coffee is a chain with 270k followers on its Instagram. I was quite surprised by this, but it seems the chain was started by a famous actor by the name of Kenji Sakaguchi which probably goes some way to explain its popularity.
