Hi, I'm Emma! I used to be a complete homebody, until I started hiking in 2022 and got immediately hooked. Since then, I've climbed more than 150 mountains in Japan, and have written about 102 of my hikes (and counting!) for you to check out on this blog.
Of course, everyone is familiar with Mt Fuji, Japan's most iconic mountain - but there are so many other mountains to explore in Japan. If you're based in Tokyo, you'll find plenty of day hikes in the surrounding prefectures, easily accessible via public transport. In the summer months, you can also head to the Japanese Alps to climb some of Japan's 3000m+ peaks.
If you aren't sure what to hike, a good place to start is the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan, a popular bucket list for many Japanese hikers. There's mountains on here in nearly every prefecture - from down in Kyushu all the way up to Hokkaido. A lot of these mountains tend to have the best public transport access, and sometimes ropeway or cablecar options to make your hike easier as well.
Japan has plenty of hiking options year-round. Here's a couple of round-up lists of my favourite hikes to get you started.
If you make use of Japan's excellent public transport system, there are so many day hike options you can do from Tokyo. I've compiled a list of some of my recommendations with a range of difficulty levels.
Choosing the "best" hikes in all of Japan is a bit of a tall order, but I've got for you a list of mountains so that you should have something you can hike regardless of the season.
Climbing Mt Fuji is fun, but seeing it from a distance is pretty amazing too. These are some of my favourite hikes to do in winter.
If you're looking for a hike in the colder months, there's still plenty of low-elevation options available.
1 March 2026
A convenient hike featuring a historic stone quarry, a 1300-year-old Buddhist temple, and the largest stone-carved Buddha in Japan.
28 February 2026
A rather unassuming mountain, but you get the opportunity to pass by some local farms, and the kawazu cherry blossoms are a highlight.
13 February 2026
A beginner-friendly winter hike, featuring some stones cutely painted to be like Ghibli's soot sprites.
17 January 2026
A 15km, 7hr course which lets you skip some of the crowds of Mt Takao. The peak offers views of Mt Fuji, and a chance to see a suspicious-yet-iconic horse statue.
Completing the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains are a bucket list item for many hikers in Japan (myself included), and many of Japan's best mountains are on this list.
If you're looking to stay near Tokyo, the less-famous Yamanashi 100 has some hidden gems and mountains with excellent views of Mt Fuji.
The Japanese Alps contain nearly all of the 3000m+ mountains in Japan, and are located in a long mountain stretching from Niigata to Shizuoka.
Hokkaido has some great hikes, best accessed by car. In 2024 we did a 10-day roadtrip around Hokkaido to hike 4 of its mountains.
I think Kyushu is a pretty underrated area with some great hiking options. You can visit Mt Aso, Japan's largest active volcano, or venture out to Yakushima island to visit the forest which inspired Princess Mononoke.
Some of my longer distance and multi-day hikes in Japan. Japan has a great mountain hut system to make your life easier as well.
